okay, here are the top ten movies of 2000. well, my opinion of it anyway. i'm no roger ebert. i'm not freudian enough. and definitely don't write as well. so everyone keeps saying, "2000, what a horrible year for movies." that may be true, but 3 of my top ten movies were seen within the last 2 weeks. so why do they wait till the end of 2000 to spring up good movies? besides the christmas bucks and oscar nominations? to trick us into thinking the year sucked, probably. i'll have to agree that 2000 wasn't the best year in movies, but that's only because 1999 was such a great year. so here goes my list. i'll write a paragraph about each movie and then rate each by entertainment value, emotional factor, and how much impact it had on me. to make it more clear, entertainment includes the aesthetics, acting, music... all combined together. and emotional, is how emotionally involved i get. emotions also include laughing, so no, i didn't shed a tear during the number ten movie. and impact, is how much i thought about the movie after viewing it. *=poor **=k ***=good ****=excellent
always, always do the "see a movie twice" test. then you realize just how much you liked it. this test proved that the second time was just as good as the first. this movie is full of wit, beauty, and wonderful music. i read somewhere about a boy who saw this movie, and he felt like all the girls in the theater were in on a secret. which makes the film more profound. because the story tellers are boys, who are grown up. and they cannot comprehend or convey the inner struggles of the lisbon girls. and when it ends; although the soundtrack (which i purchased months before i saw the movie), the name of the movie, the famous book, all points to one outcome; i was still shocked. not to mention, kristen dunst is always a plus. entertainment: **** emotional: **** impact: ****
most drug movies glorify drugs, and if they don't they never show what the drugs are really like. requiem for a dream breaks those rules. if you have a friend who is thinking of becoming a junkie (like people actually sit there and ponder the thought) this is the movie to snap them out of it. to describe this movie in a superficial way, it's the magnolia of 2000. you have several main actors, and you're taken on an emotional journey as they face their fix. whether it be consumption of food, tv, money, sex, or drugs; every one of those objects creates more obstacles for the character. i still feel like i haven't figured it all out. the split screens are a mystery to me. the way the drug use is shown is very mechanical yet seems so dead on. and the last sequence of the film, is what i can't get out of my head. both my brother and i are still affected by this movie. entertainment: **** emotional: **** impact: **** 3. cast away
robert zemeckis i love you. a man works for fed ex, he's practically married to his job. yeah, yeah, i know.. i'm spoiling some plot, but haven't the previews already done that? so anyway, this is the story of my journal. this is the story of the sender. this is the story of choices, and fate. it's done in a very minimal way. but it's breathtaking. the island scenes are what makes the movie. and i can't understand how anyone wouldn't think wilson was touching. even so, this movie doesn't get a perfect score. why? ... helen hunt! bob and i have decided that her character is a whore. angela disagrees. but with that said, the ending is understandable and thought provoking. entertainment: *** 1/2 emotional: *** 1/2 impact: **** 4. the beach
yes, i'm ducking. i first watched this and thought.. "well, that was okay." that night i kept thinking about it. a week goes by, i buy the soundtrack. i'm still thinking about the movie. i admit to my friend that i more than thought it was okay. she admitted the same thing. there is no shame in liking a leo dicaprio movie. even when he's supposed to play "some dreamy guy" which i don't think he played. this movie just had a lot of impact on me. and wanting to be more adventurous, whatever the costs. because aren't we all looking for something? and isn't the searching the actual thing we want? we all aim for some drama, some adventure... because boredom breeds depression. this is why guys go for high maintenance girls, and why girls go for assholes. we all want a challenge. okay, i'm going on a tangent. but don't overlook this movie just because of leo. entertainment: **** emotional: ** impact ****
i love foreign movies. foreign movies tend to take more risks. i especially love foreign movies who have children as their main character. ponette, cinema paradiso, life is beautiful all come to mind. butterfly is a spanish movie, about 1930's spain. i've lived through political turmoil, i know about people who have to hide their true opinions, and beliefs. i've heard of and known of people back stabbing each other. all of this i've seen as a child. and this is what the movie is about. the ending of this movie, left me paralyzed. the audience was left high and dry at the end, and this is the biggest criticism that i've heard about this movie. but that's the point. you're supposed to feel that. heart-wrenched. entertainment: *** emotional: **** impact: *** 6. crouching tiger, hidden dragon
sense and sensibility meets any kung fu movie. all the people who are comparing this to titanic are chumps. the romantic parts closely resemble sense and sensibility, which is a good thing. and while everyone is raving about michelle yeoh, i was more intrigued by ziyi zhang. if i haven't said this enough: the best fight scenes EVER. and it has the same choreographer as the matrix. i also have to say this is a movie for everyone. if you like comedy, romance, foreign, action, fantasy, and/or drama genres, but you're looking for a movie that transcends those genres; this is the movie for you. and now that they took out the nudity to make it pg-13, you can take the kiddies to see it too. maybe it will make your little sister want to become a kung-fu master?! i know it made me want to be one. kung-fu is my career path now. no more career path turmoil! entertainment: **** emotional: *** impact: ***
drenched. i was totally and utterly drenched in tears after seeing this movie. last time i cried this much was watching ponette. bjork did great! sometimes when i get eye sore headaches, i am convinced i'm going blind. it makes me want to be in a musical too. so musicals are dying, and i'm not sure this movie revives it. the non musical parts were hard to watch. i had a headache all through out. the shakey camera was an interesting touch, but makes me not want to see the movie again. plus, i don't think i want to be bawling that much again. entertainment: ** emotional: **** impact: ****
can you say best screenplay of 2000, and best supporting actress of 2000? those are my predictions. kate hudson was magical. the story was great. it was entertaining to watch. but i feel like there was something missing. it didn't capture me as much as i thought it would from watching the previews and from hearing the word of mouth. entertainment: **** emotional: *** impact: ** 9. the cell
becca had nightmares because of this movie. i don't blame her. and as kelly points out, the imagery and visuals are so powerful. which is something i'd expect from a music video director like tarsem singh. but without the visual imagery, without the surreal moving remakes of salvador dali paintings (at least i think they were his, maybe another surrealist,) you are still left with poor dialogue. entertainment: *** emotional: ** impact: **** 10. road trip
tom green. i love tom green. sure any other movie could have made it for number 10. but, i think this was the best comedy of 2000. although this is a judgment based on the 2000 movies that i have seen. so i can't include bring it on, or charlies angels. maybe they would have made it? but, as far as crude comedy, i enjoyed this more than american pie. i've also developed a crush on paulo costanzo because of road trip. entertainment: **** emotional: *** impact: * movies that didn't make it: traffic: (i just watched this tonight.) maybe i would have been more impressed with it, if i hadn't watch requiem the night before. plus, the 'drugs are bad mmkay' message is too prevalent lately. so i thought this movie was mmkay. benicio and don cheadle made me proud though. charlies angels didn't make it either, because i haven't seen it yet. erin borkobitch didn't make it either, but i have a feeling i'll hate that movie. gladiator didn't make it either. why people think it should be in the top ten leaves my clueless. the only thing it had going for it was the violence and russell crowe. snatch is technically a 2000 film. but i won't see it till late january. i'm sure there are many more movies that could have made the list, if only i had seen it. but i didn't. see this is it. my top ten of 2000.
i'm writing this after i made this list. the date is 2/24/01. i don't think this list is accurate enough anymore. o brother where art thou should be on this list. it should be number 8 in fact. bumping almost famous and the cell down one spot, and removing road trip from the list entirely. i told my brother about this bump. he wasn't too happy, since road trip is one of his favorites. but i'm sorry road trip, o brother where art thou has bumped you OOOUT!
i'm very picky about certain types of movies: sci-fi, horror, and slapstick. this was a slapstick comedy that i totally loved. not only was it funny, but the shots were amazing. george clooney did deserve the golden globe he got. entertainment: **** emotional: *** impact: *** |
